Stain only works when it can soak into clean, dry wood. Put it over dirt, mildew or a failing old coat and it peels or blotches in a season. Most of a staining job is getting the wood ready to take it.

How we do it

Replace loose or rotted boards before any stain goes on
Clean and brighten the wood, and strip or sand a coating that has failed
Let the wood dry out fully, then stain
Sand between coats on interior wood and add a clear topcoat where it needs one

Picking a stain

Transparent stain shows the most grain and protects the least. Solid stain shows the least grain and protects the most. Semi-transparent sits in between. We bring samples and tell you plainly which one suits the wood and how much sun it gets.

Questions about deck, fence & wood staining

How long after washing can you stain?

The wood has to be fully dry, which usually means a dry day or two after cleaning, depending on the weather.

Can you stain over my old stain?

If the old coat is sound and the same type, often yes. If it is peeling or failed, it has to be stripped or sanded first.

Which stain lasts longest?

Solid stain protects the most, then semi-transparent, then transparent. We bring samples and tell you which fits your wood.
