A finished garage, or a garage turned into a family room or office, gets the same taping and finishing as any room in the house, plus a few problems of its own. Compound should not go on in a cold space, so in the colder months we run heat until the room and the board are warm before the first coat and keep it there until the last coat dries. Joints get paper tape, outside corners get bead, and three coats go on feathered and sanded. In a garage that stays a garage, we can tape and coat the board to a level that suits shelving and tools, and we write that level down.

If you are converting a garage, the old slab, the wall to the house and any new window or door all affect what gets framed and hung before finishing starts. The wall between an attached garage and the house has its own requirements, so we check with the Village of Villa Park before any board on that wall is taped. Once the walls are done, the room should feel like part of the house, not a garage with paint on it.
