Gray, mildewed boards brought back to clean wood and stained to stand up to the shade. Palos Park decks, fences and wood siding are on our regular route.
Weathered wood turns gray because the surface fibers break down, and stain over that gray layer looks muddy and wears off. We scrub it with a wood cleaner, follow with a brightener to even the color, and strip or sand off any old coating that is letting go. Loose or rotted boards get replaced first. Once the wood is dry, the stain goes on, worked into the grain and the board ends.
We cover Palos Park along Route 45, 123rd Street and McCarthy Road, next to the Palos and Sag Valley forest preserves. If your deck sits under a heavy tree canopy, it stays damp longer after rain and grows mildew and algae faster than a deck in full sun. On wood like that we wash off the growth and give it extra drying time before staining. More pigment means more protection, so on a shaded deck we talk through a semi-transparent or solid stain and how much grain each one leaves showing.

Green and black growth scrubbed from boards, rails and steps before any stain.
A brightener follows the cleaner to bring the wood back to an even color.
Shaded boards get more time to dry out, checked before we stain.
Old stain that is flaking gets stripped or sanded off.
Boards gone soft from staying wet get cut out and replaced with new wood.
Stained wood siding, trim and fences done with the same cleaning and prep as the deck.
We start on site, looking at the wood, the shade and how it drains, and then you get a written estimate covering prep, repairs and the stain. If cleaning uncovers soft boards we did not catch, we show you and price them in writing before anything is replaced. Wash day and stain day are set apart so the wood has time to dry, and we work around rain. At the end we go over the deck with you, rail to rail.
