A new exterior color that covers evenly, with the coats it actually needs written down before we start. We paint Wheaton houses with the prep done before the color goes on.
Repainting the same color and changing the color are two different jobs, and the estimate should say which one you are getting. A big color change often needs a primer or an extra finish coat so the old color does not show through, and we write that down instead of discovering it on the wall. Either way, the prep is the same: wash, scrape loose paint, sand the edges, prime bare wood, replace rotted trim and renew the caulk at open joints. Siding, trim, soffit and fascia, doors and shutters are all included where you want them.
We work in Wheaton every week, around Roosevelt Road, Naperville Road and Main Street, from the Metra station out past Wheaton College and the Illinois Prairie Path. If you are thinking about a new color, we suggest painting a sample patch on the shady side and the sunny side, since the same color looks different on each. Where your house has two materials, say brick on the lower floor and siding above, we confirm which surfaces get paint and which stay as they are. Brick that has never been painted is a decision to think through, and we lay out the pros and cons before you commit.

Sample patches painted on more than one wall so you see the color in shade and in sun before we commit.
A primer coat where a dark-to-light or light-to-dark change needs one, listed in the estimate.
The number of finish coats on each surface written down, so coverage is decided before we start.
Washing, scraping, sanding and spot priming done before color, with rotted trim replaced.
Trim, doors and shutters cut in cleanly in their own colors, with straight lines at the siding.
Plantings, walks and the driveway under drop cloths, and the yard picked up each day.
Once the colors are picked, we write the estimate around them: each surface, its prep, the primer if one is needed, the product and the coats. Your sign-off on that document is what we work from. If prep turns up rot or damage we could not see at the estimate, we stop, show you and price it in writing, and the extra work waits for your approval. We book the work for dry days above 50 degrees, spring to fall, and the last step is a walk around the house with you.
Bring your color ideas to the estimate. Call or text (815) 585-1750, and the coats and products will be written down before work starts.
