Where a Glen Ellyn remodel puts new drywall next to old plaster, we finish it so you cannot tell where one stops and the other starts. The wall ends up on one plane, with one smoothness and one paint sheen.
Plaster walls are usually thicker than a single layer of drywall, and they have a harder, glassier face. When a remodel puts new board beside them, the finisher has two problems: a step in thickness at the joint and a surface that takes paint differently. We bring the board up to the plaster line with shims or a thicker board, tape the joint, and float it out wide so the step disappears. Then a skim coat over the new board, a level 5 finish, gives it a face closer to the plaster so the paint sheen matches.
Glen Ellyn is on our regular route, reached on Roosevelt Road and Route 53, and we work the streets around Main Street and Lake Ellyn as well as the rest of DuPage County around them. If your Glen Ellyn house still has plaster in some rooms, a kitchen opening, a closed doorway or a new bath wall will put drywall right beside it. We look at the plaster near the joint before we start, because loose or cracked plaster at the edge has to be secured first or the new seam cracks along it. The goal is a wall that reads as one surface from corner to corner.

New board shimmed or sized up so its face sits even with the plaster beside it.
Loose or cracked plaster at the joint fastened and filled before any tape goes on.
The new-to-plaster seam taped and coated well past the edge so no step shows.
A thin coat over the new board so its surface takes paint like the plaster does.
Inside corners taped and outside corners beaded to line up with the existing walls.
Plastic at the doors, floors covered and sanding dust collected.
We start with a free visit to look at both the new board and the plaster around it, then write an estimate that covers the tie-in and the skim. If the plaster near the joint is in worse shape than it looked, we show you, price the extra repair in writing and wait for your approval. Skim coats and plaster repairs both need drying time, so the visits are set ahead, and we book around the days we said. Before paint, we look at the wall together in the light it will live in.
