On a textured wall, the patch itself is only half the job. We still cut back to sound board, set new drywall or a backed patch, tape it and finish it in feathered coats, but then the texture has to go back on to match. We test the spray or hand texture on scrap board until the pattern and size look right, then apply it over the repair and blend it into the surface around it. Primer and paint follow, and on a ceiling we often paint the whole plane so the sheen is even.
