Get a Carol Stream deck you can trust underfoot again, with the rotted boards, joists and posts found and replaced before anyone steps through a soft spot.
A deck rarely fails all at once. It goes one soft board, one spongy stair tread, one post splitting at the base, and the question becomes whether to keep fixing it or start over. We pull a few boards, probe the joists and posts with an awl, and tell you which answer the wood supports. If the frame is sound, we replace what is rotted and leave the rest, and if it is not, the estimate says so in writing and prices a new deck in treated lumber or composite.
Carol Stream is on our regular route, and North Avenue, Gary Avenue and Army Trail Road get our crew to most backyards in the village. It is a DuPage County town with the Great Western Trail cutting across it. On any deck, rot starts in the places that stay wet longest: the tops of joists under the boards, the bottoms of stair stringers and post bases sitting in soil. Those are the first places we check, because a new board screwed into a rotted joist will not hold for long.

Soft or split deck boards come out and new ones go in, fastened into solid wood and matched as closely as the old decking allows.
Rotted joists get sistered or replaced, and rusted or loose hangers come off for new ones set with the correct fasteners.
A post that has rotted at grade is shored, cut out and replaced, then set on a proper post base instead of buried in dirt.
Most deck failures start where the deck meets the house, so we check the ledger flashing and bolts first and fix them if they are wrong.
When the frame is past saving, we build new in treated lumber or composite, with stairs and railings to current code.
Porch steps, railings, columns and ceilings get repaired or rebuilt so the front entry is as solid as the back deck.
We come out, walk the deck and the area under it, and write up what we found with a price for each part of the work. If you want options, the estimate shows repair and rebuild side by side so you can compare them. Once boards come up, a joist can turn out worse than it looked from below, and when that happens we stop, show you, and price it in writing before going further. We book around the days we said and finish with a walk across the deck with you, stairs included.
